Announcement: The Russell Family Foundation is hiring for an Executive Assistant to the Chief Executive Officer. Please click here for more information.
TRFF Vision: A sustainable and peaceful world for people, places and communities.
TRFF Mission: Investing resources and relationships in grassroots leaders, environmental sustainability and global peace.
We make charitable grants in three geographical areas and in three thematic interests. We fund locally, regionally and globally.
Locally, we support grassroots leadership and a selected number of nonprofit organizations in Tacoma and Pierce County.
Regionally, we make grants in Western Washington related to Environmental Sustainability.
Globally, we fund a select group of nonprofits working on issues of peace and security.
In 2010, the foundation has three programs for grantmaking:
- Jane's Fund - honoring the memory of Jane T. Russell, foundation co-founder, focused locally on grassroots leadership in Tacoma and Pierce County as well as a select group of community causes with which she was involved for many years;
- Environmental Sustainability - focused regionally on Puget Sound, polluted runoff, green infrastructure and environmental education; and
- George F. Russell, Jr. Fund - working globally on peace and security issues, with a particular interest in the countries of Eastern Europe, the former Soviet Union and Asia Pacific.
Of the three programs above, the foundation accepts applications for Environmental Sustainability only. Due dates for letters of inquiry for the environmental sustainability program in 2010 are
Monday January 4, 2010 (final decisions made May 20, 2010)
and Monday July 12, 2010 (final decisions made December 8, 2010)
.
For the July 12th deadline we will be launching a new online application system. This will replace our current system of accepting letters of inquiry via regular mail and fax. Please click here between June 1 and July 12 to register your organization with our new online application system and to submit a letter of inquiry application online. Please DO NOT mail in a letter of inquiry for the July 12th deadline.

- working cooperatively and respectfully with the community;
- sharing widely the accomplishments and knowledge of grantees;
- taking a stand on critical issues; and
- conducting its business in a responsible way.
An example of how we conduct our business in a responsible way is our dedication to making TRFF office practices environmentally friendly. Foundation staff are always looking for new opportunities to align our day to day work choices with our value of sustainability.
